Types of Hypertension

Essential hypertension is high blood pressure without a known cause. Ninety to ninety-five percent of patients who experience hypertension have this type.

Secondary hypertension is high blood pressure with a known cause, such as a disease, side effect of a medication, or an addiction. Generally when the disease is treated or the cause removed blood pressure returns to normal.
